How to Crochet Clothes Hanger Cover

Materials:

1 skein of Red Heart Super Saver yarn (364 yds/333 m per skein, medium weight yarn). Less than

100 yards are needed per hanger. Sample hangers were done in Turqua, Spring Green, Pumpkin,

and Perfect Pink.

Crochet Hook, Size G (4 mm or 4.25 mm)

Needle (to weave in ends). Scissors. Stitch marker (paperclip, scrap yarn, safety pin)

1 wooden shirt hanger – or – 1 plastic shirt hanger (type found in store displays)

Size/Gauge

Finished size: Sample measures 11” from center to one end. Gauge: 14 stitches & 14 rows = 4”

Terminology:

CH = Chain

RND = Round

SC = Single Crochet

SC2TOG = Single Crochet 2 Together

SLST = Slip Stitch

ST = Stitch

Make 2 hanger sleeves.

Leave a 24" beginning tail for sewing the seam (in the last section). Slipknot. CH 15. SLST to form ring.

Note: The starting CH is dependent upon the thickness of the hanger at its top area. You may need more or perhaps less CHs.

RND 1: CH 1. SC around.

RND 2: Working in spirals, SC around, marking first ST.

RNDs 3+: SC around, marking first ST.

Optional tapering.

Some hangers are thicker at the top but decrease in size along the way. At RND 12, my sample hanger’s width became thinner. You can reduce 1 stitch per RND by doing the following 

Next RND: SC2TOG over the first 2 STs. Mark ST. Then SC around.

You may wish to repeat this decrease RND one or two times more depending upon the thickness of your hanger. Otherwise –

Next RND+: SC around, marking first ST.

Continue working in SC spirals until you reach the end tip of your hanger.

Next RND: SC2TOG around.

Leave a 10" tail end and whip stitch to close the ring. Cut and weave in this end.

After both sleeves have been made, place them onto the hanger. If desired, use small amounts of polyester filling to serve as padding inside the sleeves. Push the stuffing through with a long

knitting needle or other similar device. Use the beginning 24” tail end of one of the sleeves to

sew the middle seam together. Cut and weave in all ends. Attach a pom-pom, flower, button, or

other decoration in the front if desired.
